DEBORAH AND DONALD SCHNELL
Our journey to the U.S. Virgin Islands began in March 1975, when Donald and I booked a vacation to St. Thomas, USVI, to escape the cold Chicago winter where we lived. I was a nurse, and Donald was a social worker in Pediatrics at the University of Chicago hospital; he also had a pottery studio and made pottery part-time. His dream was to quit social work and do pottery full-time. We were immediately captivated by the inviting atmosphere, vibrant community, and artistic island spirit of the USVI. After two day trips to St. John, it was settled. We found a place to rent, got married that May, packed up the kiln, clay, and wheel—and fully relocated to St. John in October to open a small pottery store.
Our family grew quickly, alongside our love for the island. Our little pottery store was taking off—and in 1978, we purchased our first property, Villa Bougainvillea, a charming two-story building near Gallow’s Point. We lived upstairs and began renting the lower unit to visitors and guests. The area was serene and undeveloped back then, offering incredible views and a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle.
In 1982, after the birth of our third child, we moved into our current home and dedicated Villa Bougainvillea to welcoming guests full-time. As our family expanded, so did our business. In 1994, we built the Beach Villa, a stunning five-bedroom property with direct beach access. It was a true family project, with our children adding personal touches and Donald’s enthusiasm bringing the vision to life. Over the years, we continued to acquire more properties, each unique in charm and location—creating what is now known as Artistic Villas.
We understand that for many, a vacation to St. John is a cherished experience, often a once-in-a-lifetime trip. That’s why we strive to ensure every stay with us is nothing short of magical. We’ve welcomed countless families, including many who return year after year, bringing their children and grandchildren to share in the island’s beauty and splendor.

Meet Eric
Eric welcomes visitors into the Donald Schnell studio and works across all aspects of vehicle and villa reservations. Come say hi to him in the studio!
Meet Frank
Frank ensures the villas are in perfect condition for you upon arrival. He is also on-call after hours to assist with any issues.
Meet Junior
Junior is Frank’s assistant who supports our landscapes with basic repairs, cleaning, and upkeep.
Meet Blake
When she’s not glazing pottery and assisting Donald in the studio, Blake welcomes guests to their villas and helps them acquaint themselves with the property. Don’t hesitate to ask Blake any questions!

Maria oversees all aspects of cleanliness and organization and ensures that all villas are well-kept, safe, and inviting—ready and waiting for your arrival!

Paola assists Maria with cleaning, quality control, and managing supplies and inventory across all villas.
DONALD SCHNELL STUDIO
Whether you’re meandering around St. John’s shops, villas, or Caribbean resorts, you’ve likely had a taste of Donald Schnell Studio’s handcrafted ceramics. Donald flawlessly captures the natural essence of St. John through his unique pottery made from raw clay blended with Virgin Islands coral and sand and adorned with recycled and crushed blue glass - giving the essence and color of the Caribbean Sea.
Originally from Michigan, Donald studied under acclaimed ceramist Ruth Duckworth while attending graduate school in Chicago, where he started developing the eclectic and artful expressions he is known for today.
